How Many Hints Do You Get in an Escape Room?

Hints are an expected part of most escape rooms. Because escape rooms are designed to be challenging, it’s normal for players to need extra direction to solve the puzzles. How many hints you get depends on the escape room you go to.

At Breakout Games we give unlimited hints to our players, without penalty. Some escape rooms have a maximum number of hints players can ask for (often 3), or they may have penalties for receiving hints, such as time taken away. At Breakout, we don’t have any limits for clues because we want you to be in charge of your own experience. You can control the room difficulty by the number of hints you ask for. If you want to be challenged, ask for fewer hints. If you need to make it easier, ask for more hints. The number will always be up to you.

If you decide you want a hint, how do you ask for one? At Breakout, you will have a personal game master who will monitor your group’s experience. You can request a hint by simply saying, “We need a hint” during the game. Your game master will give you a clue through the intercom system.

While the decision is up to you, we recommend asking for a hint when you feel really stuck. When you’ve tried a few different solutions but you’re still not getting the right answer, it’s a good idea to ask for a clue. Read more about when to ask for a hint in this post.
