What Age Is An Escape Room For?

Escape rooms are a rewarding bonding experience you can have with your family. Not only are escape rooms immersive and suspenseful, but they are also educational. They challenge you to use your brain power to solve problems to make your escape.
But what age are escape rooms best for? And how do you know if a particular escape game is best for your family? If you’re a parent or caregiver thinking about bringing kids to an escape room, this post will give you some guidance.

Escape Room Age Limits
While we allow children of any age to participate in our escape rooms, we’d recommend our rooms mostly for children ages 10 and up. Kids in late elementary school and up have a better ability to understand the puzzles in our rooms.
However, you are the best judge of what is appropriate for your children. We encourage people bringing kids to think about the children’s interests and ability levels to make this decision. Keep in mind that they will need to be able to follow directions and be respectful of the props in the room.
There are a couple of “rules” we have with age limits:
  • Any participant under 18 will need to have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian to play
  • Groups of children 14 and older can play the rooms without a parent or guardian present. All children 13 and younger must have someone 18 or older play the room with them.

Choosing a Room
We consider all of our rooms at Breakout to be appropriate for children (even some of the more “creepy” ones like Kidnapping or Hostage. We have plenty of groups of kids who love these rooms!)
The best thing to do is consider your children’s interests. If they love cowboys, maybe they’d love our Wild West escape room. If they love spy movies, maybe they’d have the most fun in our Bomb Squad room.
We encourage parents and caregivers to involve their children in deciding on a room theme. Look at the options together and see what you’d like to do as a family.

Solving Puzzles
We design our escape room puzzles to be challenging for adults, so they will definitely be challenging for children. You may, as the adult playing, have to do a lot of the work. But you also might find that your kids are puzzle wizzes and end up solving more than you! It really depends on the group.
In general, kids are often good at finding clues. Encourage them to look around and search high and low in the room to see what they can find. They might not always know what to do with a clue, but they’ll feel good about having found it.
If your group is struggling to solve something, you can always rely on your game master for help. They will be monitoring your entire escape experience and will be ready to give you clues whenever you need them. At Breakout, we don’t limit the number of hints you can use. We encourage groups with kids in them to ask for more hints to nudge them toward answers.

Your time as a family is important, and we don’t take it lightly at Breakout that you choose to spend it with us. If you do bring your family to our escape rooms, our game masters will work hard to make it a fantastic experience.
