You only get 60 minutes to solve an escape room. So how much time should you spend on any one puzzle? And how do you know if you’re close to escaping or not, especially since escape rooms have so many twists and turns?
In this post, we’ll give you some expert tips to help you pace yourself throughout your escape room experience.

Count the locks you can see.
The first thing you should do in any escape room is find all of the locks you’re able to see. Pay attention to what kind of locks you have (numbers, letters, etc.) and how many digits they have. This will help you know what kind of codes to look for.
But counting the number of locks also lets you know what you have yet to solve. You know that you need to allocate enough time to solve each lock.
There may be some exceptions to this as some escape rooms do not use physical locks, or you might start out in a small area where there are not a lot of locks yet. But still, look around and estimate what you have to open or solve.

Assume there is a secret room.
Escape rooms are full of surprises. There might not always be a secret room, but it’s good to assume that you can’t see everything yet, just to be on the safe side.

Use the five-minute rule.
The five-minute rule can help you decide when to ask for a hint: if you haven’t found anything new or solved something in about 5 minutes time, it’s a good idea to go ahead and ask for a hint. Using this rule can help you challenge yourself to solve most things on your own, but it gives you a chance to ask for help when you need it so you don’t get stuck.

We hope these tips help you use your time wisely in your next escape room! Ready to play? Click here to book your next adventure.
