 Hot take: You don’t lose an escape room by not breaking out. 
On paper, the goal of an escape room is simple: solve a series of puzzles and escape in 60 minutes or less. That’s the scoreboard version. The technical definition. The thing people think they’re signing up for. 
But that’s not why anyone actually plays.  People play escape rooms to have a good time and connect with others.

So how do you really lose an escape room?  By not having fun. Hear us out.

We’ve Seen Millions of Games—Here’s What Actually Sticks 

At Breakout Games, we’ve run millions of games for millions of players. And if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s this: 
No one leaves saying, “Wow, I’ll never forget Puzzle #7.” 
They leave saying things like: 
  • “I loved how we all started thinking the same way by the end.” 
  • “ Everyone brought something different to the table."
  • “We HAVE to do that again.”
What players remember isn’t the lock combination—it’s the way it felt to solve (or completely overthink) it together.

Escaping Is Optional. Enjoying Yourself Isn’t. 

Some groups escape. Some don’t. Both walk out smiling. 
The groups that don’t have fun? They’re not the ones who ran out of time. 
They’re the ones who: 
  • Took it way too seriously
  • Shut each other down instead of collaborating
  • Focused so hard on “winning” that they forgot to enjoy the experience
An escape room isn’t a test. It’s not a measure of intelligence. It’s not about proving anything.

If you want to guarantee a “win,” here’s the real strategy:

Solve puzzles, sure. But don’t miss the moments in between.
