How to Plan the Perfect Proposal

At Breakout, we have been lucky to be part of hundreds of proposals across our 30+ locations nationwide! One of our proposal stories was actually featured in a New York Times article. We're passionate about helping couples create a moment they will never forget.

If you're looking to escape ordinary engagement, take our top 5 tips and start planning!

1. Involve family and friends

Proposals are twice as fun when you have family and friends there to celebrate. A proposal at an escape room makes including loved ones easy AND won’t give anything away! Gather your crew for a family or friend group activity or fake a group text from a friend asking everyone to try out a new escape room together and then secretly plan the big reveal without your partner knowing.
If you prefer a more private engagement, you can always plan a date night for just the two of you and have any family or friends watching from the Game Master cameras behind the scenes!

2. Hire a photographer

Getting engaged is the biggest moment you and your partner have had yet, so don’t let that moment go without snagging some photos! Your photographer can hide in the room somewhere or step in as the proposal is happening. You can even ask your Game Master to get another angle from the camera footage in the room! Either way you capture it, it will be such a fun memory to have and to share with family and friends. Make sure to schedule some time afterwards for a few fun photos outside the room or even a photoshoot in your city!

3. Involve the staff

We have planned hundreds of engagements and know how to make the experience REALLY special. Our Game Masters have helped stage candlelit paths, flowers in the room, and even altered the game experience to fit the engagement. At minimum, it can be really fun to hide the ring somewhere in the room! Give the Breakout team a heads up when you book to help with that!

P.S.

If you really want to impress your partner, your Game Master can tell you ahead of time how to break out and make you look like a total hero for flying through the room. Game Masters are the secret weapon of proposals!

4. Make it personal

Whether you include a special handwritten letter or add in a step of your own, there are so many ways to make the experience unique like your love story has been. You know your partner better than anyone, so think of what would make them smile, laugh, or even cry tears of joy! Don’t forget, your Game Master can help you execute your plan, so give us a good heads up and we can really make some proposal magic with you.

5. Plan a follow-up activity

You can head out for a special dinner with family, spend some time one on one at a place you two love, or even plan a whole party and invite everyone! You will want some time to celebrate and show off your new engagement, so don’t stop at the escape room. Bring your photographer along to get more memories from the day and keep the party and the fun going! Need some recommendations of great local places? Your Game Masters always have some amazing suggestions!
Nothing is ordinary in the escape room world, and your proposal should be anything but. Give us a call if you are ready to start planning your proposal and we’ll work our Breakout magic!
